We’re pleased to announce the launch of a special podcast episode Wamboma about our pioneering impact project in Tanzania where local women are being empowered to become successful farming entrepreneurs.

In the episode, Trustee Dr Yasmin Begum speaks to Co-director Dr Tricia Barnett to understand more about how the project came about and what’s inspiring this groundbreaking work around the Kilimanjaro area.

Before the Wamboma project, local women had been struggling to make money from farming, going through middlemen when selling produce to hotels which catered for tourists. The initiative not only taught better farming practices but also fostered entrepreneurship, enabling the women to sell directly to the end-buyers. So far, it’s transformed the lives of 150 women in five villages.

Tricia speaks frankly about the challenges and successes of the initiative and explains why perseverance is so important to success. We also learn about the partnership with Kilimanjaro Women Information Exchange and Community Organization (KWIECO) and hear from project workers Elizabeth Mushi and Lillian Mandari, who explain how they have helped implement Equality in Tourism’s vision.

Crucially, we also hear from the local women whose lives have been transformed by the Wamboma project. One of the participants, Witness Yusufu, highlights how the initiative has changed the lives of her family, giving them hope and means to thrive.
