Dr Lucy Ferguson, along with Equality in Tourism Associate Daniela Moreno, acted as a gender consultant in 2011 for a large European Commission project on Vocational Training and Sustainable Tourism. This was the first substantive development project that aimed to focus explicitly on gender equality and women’s empowerment. Part of the project involved the collection of good practices in gender and tourism from across the partner countries – Bolivia, Nicaragua, Senegal, Morocco and Gambia. During this project, Lucy and Daniela gained an excellent insight into the challenges of mainstreaming gender into tourism projects. One of the results of the project was the publication Tourism as an Opportunity: Good Practices in Sustainable Tourism from a Gender Perspective, which includes a set of criteria for good practice in gender and sustainable tourism.
