Polly is a publisher, journalist and teacher. Much of her journalism has been centred on the Caribbean but her first books were about the role of women: in employment (Women and Work, with Lindsay Mackie, 1978) and in politics (Power and Prejudice, with Anna Coote, 1990). For many years she worked for the Observer and the Guardian. Her book Last Resorts: the Cost of Tourism in the Caribbean (1996) was followed by Fire from the Mountain: The Tragedy of Montserrat and the Betrayal of its People (2000). She was co-author (with Robert Cleverdon) of the marketing report on the feasibility study for Dominica’s Waitukubuli National Trail (2002) and sole author of a report into the posadas (guesthouses) of Sucre, Venezuela. In 2006, she wrote the introduction to Tourism Concern’s book, The Ethical Travel Guide. As a tour operator (1988-90), she organised and ran Traveller’s Tree, ecotourism tours of Dominica. She is also a qualified teacher in adult literacy.
