Charmarie Maelge

Charmarie Maelge has over 20 years of experience working in the tourism industry, spanning government, INGOs, and private sector organisations. She has spearheaded the destination marketing for Sri Lanka Tourism as the Managing Director of the Tourism Promotions Bureau. Her career has focused on supporting and advocating for responsible and sustainable tourism, using her passion for equality and sustainability to bring about crucial change within the Sri Lankan tourism industry.

Charmarie is the Founder Director of the Responsible Tourism Partnership (RTP) in Sri Lanka and has conceptualised and implemented a number of flagship projects in nature conservation. Examples include: “Trees for Life” livelihoods, involving rural women artisans and informal sector beach operators; climate change mitigation programmes; a pictorial guide for responsible travellers to the island; the “Learning Involving Nurturing Community” (LINC) project in Beruwela and Bentota’s southern coastal belt; “Greening Sri Lanka Hotels” Energy Optimisation and Natural Resources Management Project to measure and reduce the carbon footprint of the accommodation sector.

Charmarie created and operationalised the National Sustainable Tourism Certification Scheme (NSTCS) for the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) in 2019. She is also a certified trainer and assessor in tourism vocational education and has trained over 600 youth to enter the tourism industry. Charmarie has worked as a Womens Business Development Adviser and Gender Specialist for UNDP & USAID.

She has conducted comprehensive gender research and analysis that focused on existing gender dynamics within the tourism sector, in order to better understand the legal, cultural, and financial practices at the community, institutional, and national levels for the USAID Indo-Pacific Opportunity Program (IPOP Project) under Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) activity.
