Our Director Lucy Ferguson has just had an article published in the International Encylopedia of Behavioural and Social Lucy 2Sciences: Tourism, the Millennium Development Goals, and Gender Equality.

The article reports that while those representing the industry claim that tourism contributes to the Millennium Development Goals, there is little evidence to support this. Rather, tourism too often perpetuates underdevelopment and human rights violations. The paper concludes that tourism has the potential to contribute to development goals, including MDG3 – the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women – but in order to achieve these goals a significant restructuring of the sector is needed.
